Fri, 18 May 2012 04:07:00 PDT
Sony kicks off this late-May 2012 Friday with the wonderful news that the PlayStation 3 version of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will be joined by a PlayStation Vita release as well. The Vita-based Sly game is to be a direct port of the console release, Sanzaru Games' Glen Egan confirms on PlayStation Blog.
In addition to carrying the core PS3 game over to a handheld platform, the Vita version of Thieves in Time will also include front/back touch features, motion controls, and cross-platform saving. Egan promises to bring out more details on the price and release date "soon." And hey, wouldn't you know it? E3 '12 is also happening quite "soon."

38 Studios In Money Trouble With The State Of Rhode Island Over $1.125 Million Missed Loan Payment
Thu, 17 May 2012 16:31:00 PDT
Curt Schillings' 38 Studios, developers of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, have reportedly bounced a check for $1.125 million to the state of Rhode Island. The money was meant to payoff the overdue part of a loan given to 38 from the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation. Earlier in May, the company defaulted on the $75 million loan from RIEDC.
The Office of Governor Lincoln D. Chafee released a statement about the issue reading: "A check from 38 Studios was hand-delivered to the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation at approximately 5 o'clock this evening [May 17, 2012]. However, upon learning from the Chief Financial Officer of 38 Studios that there were insufficient funds to cover the payment, the check was returned. The EDC remains willing to accept readily available funds."
REVIEW: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Review Is At Hand
Additionally, the developer wasn't able to make its payroll this week, leaving at least some of the company's 379 full-time employees without a paycheck. 38 let go all of their temps and contractors, according to Joystiq.
The EDC called a three-hour emergency meeting on May 16, 2012 to determine what they were going to do about the funds. In the end they decided not to take immediate action to help the developer. Read More?

Far Cry 3 Multiplayer Beta Details -- Coming This Summer
Thu, 17 May 2012 12:23:00 PDT
The Far Cry 3 multiplayer closed beta will run for two weeks this summer on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. In the beta, up to 16 players will be able to shoot it out on multiple maps in all sorts of different modes, including Firestorm mode, with six different playable classes. The Far Cry 3 beta will also include all sorts of weapons with hundreds of upgrades and customizable options available. Sounds to me like they're cramming a whole lot of awesome in to this beta.
If you want to get in on the action you'll either have to purchase a copy of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier at Gamestop, be a GameStop PowerUp Rewards Member, and they'll e-mail you a code. Or you can enter for a chance to win a code via Far Cry's Facebook.
Far Cry 3 will be out on September 4, 2012 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Diablo 3 Easter Egg Is All Sunshine And Rainbows
Thu, 17 May 2012 06:42:00 PDT
Dedicated Diablo 3 players have already discovered the secret level that we all knew would be hidden away somewhere in the game. The Diablo series has a history of such things, with rumors of a secret cow level than never panned out in the first game leading to the inclusion of an actual secret cow level in the second game. Moo Moo Farm is no more in Diablo 3, however. It's been replaced by Whimsyshire, a colorful land filled with deadly unicorns, stuffed teddy bears, and flowers.
Getting to the hidden area -- and earning the achievements and loot that it offers -- involves finding an assortment of random object spread out between acts 1-4 of the game, and then using those objects to somehow open a portal. You can find a rough set of instructions in the Battle.net forums (via Polygon). You can also see what this ridiculous location looks like in the video up top.

Serious Sam 3 And Serious Sam Double D XXL Both Coming To XBLA
Thu, 17 May 2012 06:20:00 PDT
Devolver Digital is making good on its plan to bring more Serious Sam to Xbox 360 consoles, with now-confirmed releases of Serious Sam 3: BFE and Serious Sam Double D XXL coming to Xbox Live Arcade in fall 2012. Both games arrived on PC in the latter half of 2011 with a future console version planned, though BFE was originally going to be a retail disc-based game. There's no specific release date for either one yet, but they'll now both be available as XBLA downloads when they do launch.
Croteam's Xbox 360 version of Serious Sam 3: BFE is a direct port of the PC release, but the new "XXL" in Double D's title indicates a souped-up console release. Mommy's Best Games builds on the side-scrolling dual-stick shooter by adding new campaign missions, challenges, enemies, Gunstacker upgrades, and a two-player local co-op mode.
Want to know more? Check out our Serious Sam 3: BFE PC review.

Darksiders 2 Release Date Announced
Wed, 16 May 2012 11:06:00 PDT
The release date of Darksiders 2 has been announced by THQ. You'll be able to play with Death as he journeys to save his brother's name on August 14, 2012.
THQ has a lot riding on the success of Darksiders 2, as the company recently layed off a slew off employees and the company's president took a 50 percent pay cut, signaling to investors a desire to be a lean, more focused company that puts out successful games.
THQ also announced that the game's been pre-ordered five times more than Darksiders, which is great considering the state of THQ right now.
Once we hear more news on Darksiders 2, we'll be sure to update you with the latest info. To make the wait go by faster, check out our latest Darksiders 2 hands-on preview.

Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock Sets The Time To May 23
Wed, 16 May 2012 07:30:00 PDT
Watch Larger Version | Watch HD Version
Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock finally has a release date. The action/platformer based on the hit BBC TV series has been kicking around for months with trailers and the like, but now we know when we'll be able to play it. And it's really soon!
The official Twitter feed for Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock confirms a worldwide PSN release on May 23, 2012. This just applies to the PlayStation 3 platform, however. A PlayStation Vita version will come to PSN a few weeks later, on June 13, in another global release. No reason is given for the platform delay. There's no date given for the PC release, though that one is still coming as well.
I think all Whovians can wholeheartedly agree that it's about bloody time. Why don't you take a peek at the trailer again to get yourself in the mood. The game's Trophy list is also now publicly available, though the more dedicated fans might pick up on a spoiler or two.

Saints Row 4 Sort Of Confirmed For PS3, Xbox 360, And PC
Wed, 16 May 2012 07:09:00 PDT
We learn today, to no one's great surprise, that Volition, Inc. is working on a fourth Saints Row game, apparently for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC platforms. The sort-of-confirmation comes from a LinkedIn profile for a Volition game designer, as spotted by the gaming Internet's super-sleuth, Superannuation (via Polygon). The Saints Row 4 shout has since been edited out of the profile.
Saints Row: The Third has made big money for THQ since it launched in late 2011, so much so that it allowed the publisher to up its earnings forecast for the year. Not only was it good news for the financially struggling company, it also virtually guaranteed that we'd be seeing more from the world of Saints Row. This LinkedIn confirmation is interesting in the sense that the game is apparently targeted for current generation platforms, but I don't think any of us are surprised to hear that a fourth game is an actual thing.

Wed, 16 May 2012 05:56:00 PDT
Naughty Dog has a new trailer for The Last of Us for you to check out, offering a first look at the newly redesigned character model for Ellie, the game's female lead. There's still no gameplay to look at, but there are also no gross, mushroom-headed zombies.

Instead, we watch as Joel and Ellie roll through an unnamed American city in a battered pickup truck while Hank Williams Sr. croons his country stylings in the background. A seemingly injured man appears in the road, but it is quickly revealed that he's the decoy for a gang of hunters. Read More?

Mass Effect 3 Rebellion Multiplayer DLC Outed
Wed, 16 May 2012 05:36:00 PDT
BioWare is preparing to release another multiplayer DLC pack for Mass Effect 3, an accidental (and now-removed) posting on the Sony Asia website reveals. The information was snatched up by Kotaku and preserved for the gaming Internet to peruse... so peruse away.
The DLC -- which the removed web listing says is out as of today, May 16, 2012 -- will add two new maps, three new weapons and six new classes to the game. If it's anything like the previous Resurgence DLC pack, it'll be a free release. How you earn those new weapons and classes, however... that's on you. Built-in microtransactions allow players to buy the same booster packs with real money that they could with in-game money.

Guild Wars 2 Release Date Revealed?
Tue, 15 May 2012 16:06:00 PDT
According to an ad spotted by game blog Kotaku, Guild Wars 2's release date is June 28. Before you mark your calendar in pen though, the ad was supposedly spotted at a Fry's in Texas, and retailers are notorious for using estimated dates for retail products. So it's unconfirmed.
Developers NCsoft has this to say in a statement:
"We have not released an official launch date within 2012 as feedback from our closed and open marketing betas will help us determine an exact release date. We will release Guild Wars 2 when it is ready."
So who's playing Guild Wars 2's beta (other than half of G4's office)?

Halo 4 Box Art Revealed Thanks To Group Puzzle-Solving Effort
Tue, 15 May 2012 06:18:00 PDT
Microsoft is using the lure of Halo 4's box art as an excuse to teach the fan community about a little thing called cooperation. A series of e-mails were sent out to the community, with each one containing a chunk of an image and a note that read: "Your piece of the Halo 4 puzzle." The NeoGAF hivemind then put its many heads together to assemble the image (via Kotaku), revealing the official box art for Halo 4.
It's a pretty sweet image, wouldn't you say? We all got our first glimpse of the post-Halo 3 Master Chief in an announcement trailer at E3 2011. News has been trickling out slowly since then, with the latest big one being the long-awaited confirmation of the game's release date: November 6, 2012. We'll certainly be seeing more of the game at 2012's E3, so stay tuned for more news in the coming weeks.

Battlefield 3's DICE-Hosted Servers Return
Tue, 15 May 2012 05:57:00 PDT
Console-playing Battlefield 3 fans might have noticed that the server browser listing is looking a little more full now that Electronic Arts has upped the number of DICE-hosted servers. An outcry among players picked up steam on May 9, 2012 when reports emerged that the bulk of the DICE-hosted multiplayer lobbies had been replaced with player-controlled lobbies obtained via the new rent-a-server feature.
This didn't go over well, since player-controlled lobbies in Battlefield 3 are subject to whatever rules the host might set, regardless of how unfair or arbitrary those rules might be. To its credit, EA acted quickly in working to restore the absent publisher-managed servers. "You should see DICE-hosted servers up today," an EA rep told VentureBeat. "I do not have the exact percentage or number of servers, but we’ll continue to monitor this to make sure all players are having the best possible gameplay experience.”
It's time like this that you have to sit back and appreciate what the Internet can do. A change was made, one that the community didn't care for. Feedback poured in and now here we are, days later, with the issue having been addressed. Good show, EA.

Diablo 3 Error Message Blocks Out Game Access
Tue, 15 May 2012 05:36:00 PDT
Diablo 3 is here at last, but the release hasn't gone as smoothly as Blizzard would like thanks to some launch day hiccups in the form of an "Error 37" message. Some players are reporting (via Shacknews) that they're greeted with a message upon launching the game that reads: "The servers are busy at this time. Please try again later. (Error 37)"
An update from the developer on Battle.net confirms that the issue is related to the servers being slammed hard with the influx of new users. "Due to high concurrency the login servers are currently at full capacity. This may cause delays in the login process, account pages and web services. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience while this is being resolved." There are also apparently issues affecting character creation that Blizzard is looking into.
This is a huge launch and issues were to be expected. Kudos to Blizzard for getting out in front of it and commenting quickly. How has your first-time Diablo 3 experience been so far? Is the game working fine? Running into these issues or any others? Let us know!

Elder Scrolls Online Faction Daggerfall Covenant Detailed
Tue, 15 May 2012 05:04:00 PDT
There are three playable factions spread across the land in the newly revealed Elder Scrolls Online, and today we have the first details on one of them: the Daggerfall Covenant. Made up of Bretons, Reguards, and orcs, this faction is largely based in and around the regions of High Rock, where the capital city of Daggerfall can be found, and Hammerfell.
High Rock is the region situated to the west and slightly south of Skyrim. It's more southerly, coastal location results in a much more temperate climate than the frozen tundras to the north. Bretons and orcs dwell here, primarily. Hammerfell sits to the south of both High Rock and Skyrim, a region composed primarily of deserts, mountains, and flat grasslands. The Redguards call this region home, having built up its multiple cities and ports.
The Game Informer feature revealing all of these new Elder Scrolls Online details says that the Daggerfall Covenent is "a lot more democratic than" the other factions. The next faction to be highlighted is the "ruthless" Aldmeri Dominion, so stay tuned for added details soon.
